What to Expect
Because we are a Church of both Word and Sacrament, we believe that both of these elements–hearing God’s Word and receiving his grace in the Holy Sacrament–are essential pieces of our worship services. Therefore, our Mass is divided into two major parts, the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist.
The Liturgy of the Word includes prayer, Bible readings, the sermon, and the Creed.
The Liturgy of the Eucharist focuses on the sacred meal that Jesus instituted among his friends the night before his crucifixion. Episcopalians and other Catholic Christians recognize the Eucharist, sometimes called Communion, as their main act of worship. By partaking in the Eucharist, the Church brings Christ’s saving sacrifice into the midst of our present reality.
Just as Christ gave himself wholly and completely for us, both on the Cross and through the Eucharist, so we give ourselves wholly and completely to the Father in worship.
